Strategic planning is one of the keys to success because it aligns you with the resources you need, and ensures that you are moving towards your dreams, towards your outcome. However, to make strategic planning effective you need two powerful tools, these are Mission and Vision. These two powerful tools guide you right from the start on how to set your goals and achieve them.

What is the mission:

The mission is the core and definite purpose of an individual or of any organization or company. This is the ultimate summary of the outcome and core values. Mission clearly clarify about what individuals or organisations have some speciality over others.
This is one of the greatest tools for personal development as well as the development of an organisation. On the other hand, we can say the mission is the real identity of any individual or any company.

What is the vision:

Cherish your visions and your dreams, as they are the children of your soul; the blueprints of your ultimate achievements.

Napoleon Hill
Vision is the special sense by which you can imagine your future, your outcome. This is the ability to see what you will be in the next 5 years, the next twenty years or in your life. This is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination.

What is the importance of having a mission:

If you don’t know where you have to go then how you will reach it! If you have no destination then where you will go! Even, having full of potential you will try to settle down your life in compromise. Having a mission means you are well aware of your destination, about your outcome. When you have a mission you will feel greater motivation from within. Having a mission clarifies you actually what you want to do, what you’re passionate about, and what dreams you have.

What is the importance of having a vision:

For both individuals and organisations, it is very important to have a vision. If you have a clear vision, you can make better decisions in any upcoming situation, not only that but you will also be prepared always for any kind of challenges to come. You will be able to manage any roadblocks. You’ll have a clear idea of what resources are needed to achieve your goals. Crystal clear vision makes you more focused on your goal and makes you life centred.
Only by having a vision, you will be aware of what you are doing and why. Having a specific vision means that you no longer had to fight against all the obstacles in your mind. You can move towards your goal in a more sincere and focused way.

Mission and vision statement:

Mission statement:

A mission statement is the written clarification of what an individual or a company wants to achieve, what kind of services an individual or a company will provide. The mission statement describes all functions and objectives of any individual or company. The statement mentions how much value a person can add to his own life and the lives of others and what he wants to achieve.

Vision statement:

A mission statement is a written declaration which clarifies your mission, your purpose and your long-term goal. The wider and clearer your vision will be, the faster success will come, and to make it more wider, clearer and closer to you, must have a written statement of your vision.

“There are many tools available to help write a mission or vision statement. but I think it’s often best to keep it simple – one or two sentences – and describe why the business exists. What is the core value or the daily purpose? Write it down and share it with everyone!” – Joanna Meiseles

How to make an effective mission statement:

1) Explore your Passion:

Find your passion first, and then creating a mission statement will be very easy for you.  Aligning your outcomes with your passions and feelings will help you to craft a great mission statement. In the article ‘How to discover your passion‘ I have explained in detail where you will find how to explore your passion.

2) Identify your core values:

You need to consider carefully what your core values are and what particular things you value most. Your values are the beliefs that guide your behaviours and action toward your journey to success. Values determine your priorities and deep-down interests, that’s why you need to know what your values are when crafting your mission statement.

3) Ecology check:

Ecology is the process of checking simply to realise if there is any part of your body or mind or if anyone from outside is objecting to your mission. You must check internal and external ecology to align your values with your mission.

4) Do keep it short:

Never write a mission statement in a huge format, spending thousands of words.  Write very briefly so that it can be easy for you to read and memorize.

5)  Make it easy to understand you:

Create a mission statement in very simple language that is easy for you and others to understand, complexity does not appeal to our minds. A mission statement will give you mental energy only when you can easily grasp it, so it needs to be explained in simple terms.

How to make a vision statement:

1) Project at least five to twenty years for the future:

Extend the vision without imagining the immediate future. Imagine and visualize what your life is going to look like in 5 years, 10 years or twenty years, and how your lifestyle is changing. Suppose you have fixed a specific target for financial success, imagine the effects of it on all aspects of your life once you achieve it.

2) Check if it is meaningful and measurable to you:

Your vision may be meaningless to the rest of the world except you. Take a closer look if it’s measurable and meaningful to you or not.    If it means nothing to the whole world but you, if you agree with your heart, then write it down quickly.

3) Check your congruency:

Check to see if you are completely congruent with the vision you’re moving or what you’re about to write,  in no case should it not seem achievable to you. Be honest and sincere about whether any doubts or objections are coming from inside your mind.

4) Align it with your mission:

It should never be happen that you have one type of vision and totally different types of mission.  If your mission and vision are complementary and supportive, your journey to success will be much smoother. Otherwise, most of your energy will be spent building castles in the blue, reducing your efficiency.

5) Yearning:

Without a real yearning or passion for anything, your outcome will be just only like daydreaming. Before creating a vision statement, check if you are yearning about it. If your yearning is on one thing and your vision statement is another, then that vision will remain a buzzword.

Conclusion:

The mission sets the direction for your life goals and the vision lightens the way for how you can achieve them. The mission defines your overall purpose in life and the vision describe actually where you will be going in the future.
The mission statement describes what you will be in the process and what you will serve for others i.e. your growth and contribution. On the other hand, the vision statement inspired and guide you to move forward toward your mission. Your vision helps to unfold life to the next level.
So, get the mission and vision statement ready as soon as possible, keeping the balance between the two.
